Scheduling Aircraft to Reduce Controller Workload
نویسندگان
چکیده
We address a problem in air traffic management: scheduling flights in order to minimize the maximum number of aircraft that simultaneously lie within a single air traffic control sector at some time t. Since the problem is a generalization of the NP-hard nowait job-shop scheduling, we resort to heuristics. We report experimental results for real-world flight data.

Hybrid Metaheuristics to Aid Runway Scheduling at London Heathrow Airport
A London Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world, it has only one runway for use by departing aircraft at any time. Separations are required between each pair of aircraft at take-off—depending on their routes, weights, and speeds—to ensure safety. Efficient scheduling of the aircraft for take-off can reduce the total separations and increase throughput. A runway controller is respo...
متن کاملHow do Air Traffic Controllers Use Automation and Tools Differently During High Demand Situations?
In a human-in-the-loop simulation, two air traffic controllers managed identical airspace while burdened with higher than average workload, and while using advanced tools and automation designed to assist with scheduling aircraft on multiple arrival flows to a single meter fix. This paper compares the strategies employed by each controller, and investigates how the controllers’ strategies chang...
متن کاملKnowledge-based Runway Assignment for Arrival Aircraft in the Terminal Area
A knowledge-based system for scheduling arrival traffic in the terminal area, referred to as the Final Approach Spacing Tool (FAST), has been implemented and operationally tested at the Dallas/Fort Worth Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility. Two types of controller advisories are generated by FAST: sequence number and runway assignment. The knowledge base for runway assignment empl...
متن کاملPrediction of Traffic Complexity and Controller Workload in Mixed Equipage NextGen Environments
Controller workload is a key factor in limiting en route air traffic capacity. Past efforts to quantify and predict workload have resulted in identifying objective metrics that correlate well with subjective workload ratings during current air traffic control operations. Although these metrics provide a reasonable statistical fit to existing data, they do not provide a good mechanism for estima...
متن کاملA Non-linear Relationship between Controller Workload and Traffic Count
Controller workload has been a focal topic in air traffic management research because it is considered a key limiting factor to capacity increase in air traffic operations. Because workload ratings are subjective and highly prone to individual differences, some researchers have tried to replace workload with more objective metrics, such as aircraft count. A significant caveat in substituting th...
